Answer

1. The five components of a data communications system :
a. Message: The message is the information (data) to be communicated. It can consist of text, pictures, sound, or video- or any combination of these.
b. Sender: The sender is the device that sends the data message. It can be a computer, workstation, telephone handset, and so on.
c. Receiver: The receiver is the device that receives the message. It can be computer, workstation, telephone handset, television, and so on.
d. Medium: The transmission medium is the physical path by which a message travels from sender to receiver. It could be a twisted-paired wire, coaxial cable, fiber-optic cable, or radio waves.
e. Protocol: A protocol is a set of rules that governs data communications. It represents an agreement between the communicating devices. Without a protocol, two devices may be connected but not communicating.

2. The advantages of distributed processing are lower cost, reliable, flexible, improve performance and reduced processing time.

3. The three criteria necessary for an effective and efficient network :
a. Performance, can be measured in many ways, including transmit time and response time.
b. Reliability, is measured by frequency of failure, the time it takes a link to recover from a failure, and the network’s robustness.
c. Security, include protecting data from unauthorized access and virus

4. The advantages of a multipoint connection over a point-to-point connection are Ease of installation, Low Cost. Point to point is for connecting 2 devices, whereas in multipoint more than 2 devices share the link. Therefore, multipoint connection provides more reliability.

5. The two types of line configuration are Point-to-Point connection and multipoint connection.

6. Multipoint: Bus, Ring
Point to point: Mesh, Star

7. Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Application.

8. Physical, Data Link, Network.

9. Application.

10. Transport layer is responsible for process (source) – to – process (destination) delivery of entire message, whereas network layer oversees host (source) – to – host (destination) delivery of individual packets across multiple links.
